From October 8-10, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency will host a delegation of leaders from the United States and nearly 20 European and Eurasian countries in Knoxville, TN, for an event focused on the safe and efficient deployment of the latest nuclear energy technologies. Organized in cooperation with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Civil Nuclear Energy Workshop: Partnering for Implementation will highlight innovative U.S. technologies that are revolutionizing the sector.
“USTDA has played a leading role in the development of advanced nuclear energy projects in Europe that will use U.S. technology,” said Enoh T. Ebong, USTDA’s Director. “It is essential for public and private sector leaders to convene and share information that will facilitate the safe and efficient deployment of these projects. Our goal is to advance our partners’ clean energy and energy security objectives while promoting the benefits of partnering with U.S. industry.”

U.S. and Republic of Korea advance economic cooperation at the 9th Senior Economic Dialogue
Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment Jose W. Fernandez met with Republic of Korea (ROK) Second Vice Foreign Minister Kang Insun in Atlanta, Georgia on October 2 for the 9th U.S.-ROK Senior Economic Dialogue (SED).
Both sides underscored the more than $140 billion in new investment pledged by ROK companies and U.S.-based joint venture partners since January 2021, including more than $24 billion in Georgia. They also reaffirmed efforts to strengthen the U.S.-ROK economic relationship to deliver benefits to the American and Korean people and promote sustainable, resilient, and inclusive growth for both sides.
The United States and ROK discussed joint approaches to improving the resilience of our supply chains and safeguarding our economic security. Specifically, they highlighted ongoing work in the Minerals Security Partnership (MSP), which is helping diversify and secure global supply chains of critical minerals. As the current MSP chair, the ROK is leading efforts to expand projects around the globe and facilitate the development of advanced industries and the transition to clean energy. They also exchanged views on cooperation on investment security and addressing non-market policies and practices.
The two countries emphasized the importance of advancing clean energy, their shared commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and working together on methane reduction initiatives. They also discussed ongoing negotiations in international fora on climate finance and a global agreement on plastic pollution. The two sides reaffirmed the importance of continued collaboration and multistakeholder consultation on digital policy such as bolstering information and communication technology infrastructure as well as the deployment of Open Radio Access Network technology around the globe.

UC Riverside-led team developed the tool through an international virtual research group
By Tina Geiger / Staff WriterA research team led by scientists at the University of California, Riverside, has developed a computational workflow for analyzing large data sets in the field of metabolomics, the study of small molecules found within cells, biofluids, tissues, and entire ecosystems.
Most recently, the team applied this new computational tool to analyze pollutants in seawater in Southern California. The team swiftly captured the chemical profiles of coastal environments and highlighted potential sources of pollution.
“We are interested in understanding how such pollutants get introduced in the ecosystem,” said Daniel Petras, an assistant professor of biochemistry at UC Riverside, who led the research team. “Figuring out which molecules in the ocean are important for environmental health is not straightforward because of the ocean’s sheer chemical diversity. The protocol we developed greatly speeds up this process. More efficient sorting of the data means we can understand problems related to ocean pollution faster.”
Petras and his colleagues report today in the journal Nature Protocols that their protocol is designed not only for experienced researchers but also for educational purposes, making it an ideal resource for students and early-career scientists. This computational workflow is accompanied by an accessible web application with a graphical user interface that makes metabolomics data analysis accessible for non-experts and enables them to gain statistical insights into their data within minutes.
